Dry media strokes

On this page, we build dry media: pigment catching the tooth of the paper.

The path, the layout, and everything under Common to every demo on Strokes apply here unchanged.

Dry media strokes

Pencil, charcoal, and pastel from top to bottom, drawn by one renderer at three settings.

Details

Grain: Paper tooth is a screen-space noise thresholded against coverage, so a light line breaks into speckle instead of fading evenly.

Media: The three media are separated by tooth scale (in pixels), width, softness, and edge roughness.

Pressure: A low-frequency noise along the stroke scales both the darkness and the drawn width.

Multicolor dry media

The same media with a list of colors. The pencil shifts its color along the stroke, like a pencil with a rainbow lead; the charcoal and the pastel color each cell of the paper tooth from the list, so the flecks read as mixed pigment.

Draw with the strokes on this page, in the drawing tool: the settings panel picks the tool, its colors, and its parameters exactly, the floating dials reroll the palette, set the width, and walk a trail of rolled tools, and Clear, Replay, and recording work as on the Drawing Tool Demo page. A turn sharper than a threshold splits the drawn line, so a fast zigzag bakes as separate strokes; each piece appears once its direction settles, and the wider the stroke, the harder its turns smooth. Strokes that read the background read the canvas itself, so they drag and bend what is already painted. With a pen tablet, pressure scales the stroke around the set width, light thinner and heavy wider, each tool by its own amount; a mouse draws at the set width.
