Shaped strokes

The strokes on this page look rather unrealistic and computer-generated. Many artists have been exploring the juxtaposition of very different textures and materials through collage. Digital media make it easy to combine various aesthetics on the same canvas.

Cloud, squares, spikes

Three outlines built from the same path: a cloud of large discs, a chain of rounded squares, and a broad stroke with sharp spikes.

Cloud: Large discs are placed at seeded offsets from the spine, and the fragment shader draws their union.

Rounded squares: Cells are stamped on a fixed grid, as in the pixel stroke, but rendered using a smooth minimum of the rounded-box distances across all cells.

Spikes: The boundary is pushed outward by a power of a triangle wave. The corner at each tip is preserved at any power, while the derivative at each valley goes to zero, keeping the tips sharp and the valleys rounded.

Tube strokes

3D tubes built around the spine and capped with rounded ends, in three styles: candy stripes, wobbling widths, and canvas-reflecting metal. A seeded wave based on arc length gives the spine depth, making the tube appear to lie above the canvas.

Candy: Diagonal stripes from a list of colors wrap around the tube like stripes on a candy bar.

Wobble: The radius expands and contracts with a seeded wave, while the color follows a gradient driven by both the wobble and the position along the stroke.

Metal: The current canvas serves as the environment map. The reflection direction offsets the sampling position, so the tube mirrors whatever has been drawn around it.

Solid strokes

open full size ↗

Chains of flat-shaded 3D solids scattered along the spine, in three shapes: tetrahedra, boxes, and cones. Each face is filled with a single color from the palette.

Each solid is assigned a seeded size, side, and orientation along the same depth-varying spine used for the tubes. Offsetting each solid to one side of the spine spreads the chain into a band rather than a line.

Rotation depends on the distance from the tip, so the whole chain turns as the stroke grows.
