Symmetric strokes

We set out to draw strokes in unexpected places. Each stroke begins with a single gesture, then repeats as its path is mirrored, rotated, or reflected across the canvas.

Symmetry is a path transform. At the start of each stroke, the rotation count or screen axes are chosen at random. Copies appear as the gesture develops and become ordinary strokes when you release, so they can be recorded, replayed, and mirrored like any other stroke. There is a 50% chance that each copy will use its own palette color.

Mirrored strokes

Each gesture is mirrored across the vertical line through its starting point. The three gestures are drawn with the pencil, brush, and ragged ribbon.

Rotational strokes

open full size ↗

Each gesture is repeated at equal intervals around its starting point. The repetition count (2 to 6) is randomly chosen when the stroke begins and stays fixed as you draw.

Screen-space symmetry

Each gesture is mirrored across the canvas's vertical center axis, horizontal center axis, or both. Using both axes also adds a point-reflected copy, for four strokes in total. The axes are randomly chosen for each stroke.
